Our story began through a small-scale research project done in a high school in Washington. We had noticed that while there are many fundraisers and charities out there to protect specific endangered animals, there are rarely such largescale organizations for plants. Additionally, we found that while animals have characteristics and cultural backgrounds that make them easily recognizable, most people struggle to identify even more common plants on sight. This is a phenomenon that some have dubbed 'plant blindness'.
It is clear that most people hardly know the names of the plants growing in their gardens. How are we to expect the public to differentiate between a weed growing on their lawn and a critically endangered, rare flower that happened to make its home there?
Our goal in making this website is to provide a convenient space where people can learn the names and traits of these less common plants, view images of plants and take some time to understand them. Learn about what fascinating fauna may be living in your area and take some time to connect and admire it. There are many strange and incredible plants out there waiting to show themselves.
We would like to form a community of environmentalist who are hungry to get out there, get down and dirty, and do some hands-on work for their local environment. It can feel isolating to try and make an impactby yourself. So find other people in your area, make volunteer teams, and help keep your ecosystem safe together.
You can make a difference by looking through the endangered plants in your area, or forming volunteer groups for your town. Most plants end up endangered because of ecosystem loss, often to human land expansion. They typically have specific environmental requirements. It is critical that we are proactive in keeping our ecosystem clean, and that we don’t spread into land where these fragile species call home. There is no landfor them to move to. We can only care for the land that they have.
